exercise 2 C

ANSWER 1 - PARTICIPANTS INVOLVED IN THE INTERCULTURAL CONFLICT

The participants involved in this intercultural conflict are the young boys and men from different Arab countries. These boys travel each year from the Middle East to London and other European countries to enjoy the open cultures which are very different from the conservative Arab culture back home. They are wealthy individuals who wish to spend their money on entertaining ventures, which are not allowed in many Arab countries.

ANSWER 2 – CONFLICT

The main conflict is that the when the young Arab boys are in London, they need to respect the peaceful community lifestyle of the city and its people. The race cars which young Arab boys use to flaunt their wealth back home, is making the residents of London a little impatient and somewhat angry as some of them have started considering it as an intrusion in their quiet neighbourhoods. Some are of the opinion that due to these racing cars in the city, there is more pollution, breathing becomes difficult and sleeping in the night becomes an issue when a very noisy car passes from the street.
Additionally, most boys go to London on vacations. So they are not really bothered about the timings at which they are out on the streets. However, for people in London, who have to get up early in the morning to work, it becomes very disturbing that their night sleeps are compromised due to the noise from these race cars.

ANSWER 3 - OPINIONS OF BOTH SIDES

While the UK citizens fell this as an intrusion in their peaceful and quiet lives, the young Arab boys consider it just a part of their vacations to go to London for just one month and enjoy the summers there, while it’s scorching hot in the Middle East, with temperatures reaching 50 Degree Celsius.
The UK citizens do not like to be disturbed by these wealthy Arabs who can drive past their race cars at much higher speed than what is allowed on the roads of London. Furthermore, they feel disturbed by the extra pollution caused by these cars as well as the noise that may even wake them up in the middle of the night. They believe it to be uncultured act by the young Arab boys, whom they believe have nothing better to do with their wealth.
On the other hand, the young Arab boys shown in the interview, say that they just go to London to enjoy their vacations. They actually give a boost to the economy. They feel it is not wrong to drive their cars or flaunt their wealth as it is what their personal property.
According to the biggest car show host in UK, Paul Wallace, it is just a show of the prized possession by young boys and there is nothing wrong with it. These boys bring their cars, enjoy their vacations, and go back home. However, during their stay, they actually give a big boost to the UK economy by spending huge amounts on consumer goods and other entertainment clubs.

ANSWER 4 – BETTER RESPONSE TO CONFLICT

Participant Response
Better Response
Panda Morgan-Thomas, a management consultant, has started a campaign against these young drivers and their activities in the Knightsbridge area.

Instead of a hate campaign against the boys, the lady can also start an awareness campaign which does not have to last all year, but can only be active for the summers. In this campaign she can meet with these boys and make them aware of the damage they are causing, not just to the neighbourhood, but also to their country’s name, by performing such acts. This may have a better impact on the issue.
Paul Wallace, said:
For four weeks out of 52, these super-wealthy individuals come and pump millions of pounds into the UK economy.

He can put it that way that these boys can bring their cars and are welcome to European countries as other tourists are, as they help give a boost to the UK economy through tourism.
Justin Town’s response to a man carrying an umbrella was not just rude, it is not the way to talk to anyone
He could have politely asked the boy to excuse. Using foul language never solves any issue. It may even make some young boys more adventurous who may feel someone is jealous of their wealth and their cars only.
The young student Rashid is taking his two latest purchases to London
When one is aware that the residents of an area does not like certain acts, they must respect their lifestyles and values. When the young boys can enjoy their lives back home, there is no need to take these cars to another country and face wrath or people as well as humiliation in the form of fines.
Abdullah’s comment about night clubs and women
It is never nice to comment in that way about women. Particularly when you are going from a society that places so much respect for women.

ANSWER 5 -  UAE young guys compared to other GCC countries

Probably the open life style in UAE  where young guys have a mixture of what the western life style offer and at the same time still honour and keep the Arabic and Islamic tradition make the behaviour of young Emirate boys more considerate and acceptable . Moreover , the mixture of expat living in UAE made  young Emirates boys exposed to different cultures and more aware of how to act .  since they do act in this manner in their schools and in the wprk environment .

Exercise 2 (world view)

PART A

ANSWER 1 - THE CONFLICT

The basic conflict discussed in the article is that Emirati women, despite the tremendous economic gains of the country, have still not started playing their important role in the economic growth and development. They are stopped by families, customs, and traditions to join mainstream work and are restricted either to the confines of their homes or allowed only to join such fields as education where there is a clear segregation between men and women.

BASIS/CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM

Women from all social strata in the UAE wish to work and be an important part in the economic growth of the country. However, it is evident that the mind-set of the general Emirati men has not yet changed. Thus they do not allow their sisters or wives to enter in a field where they have to work shoulder to shoulder with men. Despite all encouragement, women participation remains low although it is growing at a very slow rate. In spite of new employment opportunities, most women opt for marriage and raising children. UAE society places a high value on those roles. Conservative cultural attitudes lead women to seek jobs that do not involve mixing with men or commuting far from home. Subsequently, most women are employed in education, health, and civil service.

ANSWER 2 - CULTURAL VIEWS BEHIND THE CONFLICT

The conservative culture that flows from the tribal background has been the main cause of conflict. Women still are expected to stay at home only to take care of the house and children. In conservative Arab households, where patriarchal values still reign, it is difficult for women to convince the men in the family that their working in organisations will not just bring in money, but will also develop their personalities and help them play an important role in development of the Emirati society. Emirati culture also supports big households and joint families (Bristol-Rhys, 2010). Large families are encouraged by the state as a national policy, and family size is six to eight children. With the changing times and increasing education and awareness among the women, the husband's authority in household affairs is declining, while the wife is gaining importance as a mother and the manager of the domestic unit (Bristol-Rhys, 2010). However, women still have not gained enough power to decide for themselves and their careers and mostly are left only managing their households and keeping away from mainstream jobs.
One major issue behind this conflict is that traditionally Arab culture promotes segregation. Thus men do not freely mingle with women even at social gatherings such as weddings. Thus it is not considered good that women work in the same area where men are present and have frequent interactions with their male colleagues. Thus, this mind-set is the root cause that makes men and heads of the families to stop the women in their families from going out and work.

ANSWER 3 - SOLUTION TO THE CONFLICT

The relaxing of social restrictions on female employment and the fact that work is increasingly being seen not merely as a source of income but as establishing personal identity have also played a role in female empowerment. Moreover, there is no doubt that inspiring female role models in all walks of life (doctors, architects, engineers, pilots, artists, explorers, skydivers) are multiplying rapidly in the UAE, encouraging women to break away from traditional areas of employment. The status of Emirati women in the workforce has witnessed a significant raise and they are now taking part in the economic development of the country as well. However, while their advancement to managerial positions is fairly acceptable in accordance with the rate of their economic participation in the government sector, Emirati women's presence in the private sector remains low in both executive and managerial positions.

Many women have joined the work and businesses and some have even shown their entrepreneurial abilities by starting their own business and taking it to success. Although, these women are less in number, the Emirati women who wish to work, can give their examples to their families and convince them showing them that women can work alongside men and still maintain their dignity. This will be a slow process but as more women come in the jobs, this mind set will eventually change. Emirati women need to be patient and keep on persevering, till they succeed.
